A massive spiraled sword with the ability to imbue itself with a flame of darkness, the Godslayer Greatsword is one of the most impressive legendary weapons owned by Elden Ring. It is extremely similar to the Onyx Blade, which can be found in the Ashes of Ariandel downloadable content for Dark Souls 3, and even has the same animation. In that animation, your character swoops the sword down to encase it in a ring of sinister and lethal flames.
Although acquiring this weapon is not quite as difficult as the Ruin Greatsword or the Golden Order Greatsword, you will still need to find your way to a hidden location, make your way through it, and defeat an Elden Ring boss (opens in new tab), who can be a little difficult to take on by yourself.
That being said, if you are interested in acquiring this legendary Elden Ring weapon(opens in new tab), continue reading. In the following paragraphs, I will show you where it is and how to defeat the fearsome Godskin Apostle boss who is guarding it.
Location of the Godslayer Greatsword in the Elden Ring
The Godslayer Greatsword can be discovered in the basement of the Divine Tower of Caelid, which is situated in the northern region of Caelid, close to the site of grace at the Dragonbarrow West. You will need to climb all the way to the top of the tower to find an entrance, and then you will have to climb back down the tower once you are inside, so be prepared to face challenges such as "is that where I'm supposed to jump next?"platforming that is typically reserved for a raid in Destiny. It wasn't until I was around level 90 that I was able to complete this mini-dungeon, and I certainly wouldn't advise attempting it before level 70, or even level 60 as a bare minimum.
You can see two ladders if you look up at the tree roots that are growing all the way up to the tower from the ground below. One of the ladders has a foe standing next to it. It is safer to engage foes at a distance in this area so that you do not run the risk of falling off. Climb the tower using the lower of the two ladders by following the root until it leads you to the outcropping on the tower.
Do not attempt to climb the second ladder until you have descended the first one safely. Instead, you should make use of Torrent to perform a double jump in order to traverse the gap in the arched path to the right. Instead, climb the ladder that is located at the end of this path.
After reaching the top of the ladder, turn to your left and continue along the path that circles the tower. Make use of Torrent's double jump to traverse any gaps, but do so with caution because there are a few obstacles that are difficult to anticipate. At the very end of the path, you will come across a beautiful spot.
The activation point of Radahn's Great Rune can be reached via the stairs located to the north of the site of grace. Follow the path to the south and descend the stairs to find the Godslayer's Greatsword. Be wary of three Redmane soldiers down below, two of whom are visible and one of whom is hidden around the bend.
What comes next is a FromSoft mainstay that is almost as recognizable as Miyazaki's fondness for poison swamps (opens in new tab): the traditional descent from ledge to ledge as you make your way to the base of a fantastic pit set piece.(For more information, see also: the Hunter's Workshop, Majula, and the Great Hollow.)The way forward is not overly complicated; your first objective should be to locate the cage elevator that is down and to the left of where you started. A Redmane soldier should be guarding this elevator. Your weight will cause the cracked strut in your path to give way, but since this is a scripted event, you won't take any damage from the fall, and this is the path you need to take in order to proceed.
Take the elevator to the upper floor, and then follow the corridor as it winds around the tower. You can get to the previous site of grace more quickly if you make a detour up the ladder and open the door at the top of the ladder. A blackflame monk can be found further down the corridor. He has a lot of poise and can cast damaging incantations, but he shouldn't be too much of a threat.
When you reach the end of the corridor, climb out on the ledge to your left, then continue around the tower, following the curve, until you are directly above another cracked strut. It will break just like the first one did, but you are programmed to survive it because there is no other way to get to the bottom of the tower. However, I experienced a bug with this one, and the fall killed me twice before it did no damage to me the third time. In the event that this occurs to you, continue to go back via the shortcut and give the jump a try until you land in a secure position next to the elevator. You'll find the boss door to the Godskin Apostle if you ride it down to another site of grace and then continue on past another blackflame monk.
It shouldn't take too many tries to get into the Apostle's rhythm because the majority of his attacks are fairly obvious and can be telegraphed in advance. An attack that he uses involves rapidly spinning his blade in front of him like an industrial fan, then holding it there while walking forward to deal massive damage. This attack was one of the things that kept throwing me off. During this attack, I was never able to get behind him, and it is much safer to maintain your distance until the fight is over. Be careful when you try to heal, as well, because the Godskin Apostle will smugly hurl a blackflame projectile at you if you try to drink from your flask while he is attacking you with it.
Reed Richards's stretchy antics will be introduced during his second phase of combat, but they won't significantly change the flow of the fight in the same way that Margit's phase 2 moves will. After you have vanquished the Godskin Apostle, you will be given the ominous-appearing armor that he was wearing, and a chest in the room after that will contain the Godslayer's Greatsword.
Elden Ring Details on the Godslayer's Greatsword, Including Its Statistics and Abilities
The Queen's Black Flame is a two-hit combo of charged blackflame attacks. It is created from the ashes of war generated by The Godslayer's Greatsword. The following are the requirements for it:
You'll need 20 Strength to wield the Godslayer's Greatsword with one hand, and 14 Strength to use it with two hands. Strangely enough for a Colossal Sword, the Godslayer's Greatsword only ever has D scaling in Strength throughout the entirety of this game.
You'll need 22 Dexterity, and the sword's D scaling will improve to C at +2, and B at +10 if you meet the requirements.
Faith is necessary to wield the Godslayer's Greatsword, which requires 20 Faith and sees its scaling improve from D to C at +7.
Endurance: Despite the fact that the Godslayer's Greatsword is lighter than other Colossal Swords, you will still need a good deal of Endurance in order to execute the full combo that comes with it and to fast roll while wearing heavier armor.
