There is a prevailing notion that Diablo 4 builds lack depth and optimization potential. While this perception may seem accurate initially, I aim to demonstrate that builds in the game offer significant room for customization and optimization. The crux of my argument lies in the intricate interplay of multiple simple systems, which ultimately give rise to complex builds.

Diablo 4 incorporates various straightforward systems such as the Skill Tree, Paragon Tree, Glyphs, Alchemy, class unique mechanics, gear stats, Aspects, and Uniques. Individually, these systems may appear shallow, but when combined, they contribute to the profound depth of builds in Diablo 4.

To delve deeper into this idea, let's consider the Whirlwind build for the Barbarian as an example. This build presents numerous optimization possibilities, particularly concerning Fury generation, which poses an intriguing problem to solve.

By carefully examining the Skill Tree, players can select specific nodes that enhance Fury generation or reduce its consumption. The Paragon Tree offers further opportunities to fine-tune the build's attributes and augment Fury-related bonuses. Additionally, Glyphs can be strategically chosen to amplify Fury generation effects or synergize with other skills.

Alchemy, another facet of the game, allows players to craft potions and elixirs that can bolster Fury generation or provide other beneficial effects during combat. Class unique mechanics, such as the Barbarian's Rage system, can be utilized to optimize Fury management and enhance overall performance.

Moreover, gear plays a vital role in optimizing the Whirlwind build. Finding items with stats that amplify Fury generation, reduce cooldowns, or increase damage output can significantly impact the effectiveness of the build. Aspects, which provide active and passive abilities, offer further avenues for customization and optimization.

Lastly, the inclusion of unique items tailored specifically for the Whirlwind build introduces additional layers of complexity and optimization potential.

In summary, while the individual systems in Diablo 4 may seem simplistic, their collective integration allows for intricate and highly customizable builds. By considering the holistic approach to optimization, players can unlock the true depth and complexity inherent in Diablo 4's build system.

Both the Dire Whirlwind Aspect and the Violent Whirlwind talent provide enhanced damage as you continue to channel Whirlwind. This incentivizes you to prolong your Whirlwind channeling, highlighting the need for passive effects in our Fury generation that enable us to generate Fury while channeling.

Some of these choices consist of:

  • A feature of berserk fury is that you acquire 6 fury per second.

  • Aspect of the Umbral: When you crowd control an opponent, you restore 4 of your primary resource. (This happens, among other things, when our Whirlwind drags adversaries)

  • When you kill an opponent while using a sword, the Seething Glyph grants you three fury.

  • 2H Up to a 10% possibility exists when using the mace to strike an adversary that they will earn 2 Fury.

  • For every 20% of your life that is healed, you will get 20 of your primary resource.

  • Your Dodge Chance against foes that are subject to Damage over Time Effects is enhanced by 8% thanks to the Assimilation Aspect. You get 10 of your primary resource when you dodge.

There are numerous approaches and systems available to address the passive Fury generation issue. One alternative is to modify the build and focus on active Fury generation by maintaining Shouts and leveraging the Aspect of Echoing Fury, which grants Fury while your Shouts are active. This would require intermittent pauses in Whirlwind channeling, making it preferable to forego effects that boost damage the longer you channel. Each build comes with its own set of challenges, and solutions can be drawn from various systems, making the character builder highly dynamic and adaptable, albeit challenging to optimize.

Itemization plays a significant role in optimizing the build. Aspects have specific rules regarding item slots, and their effects can be enhanced based on the slot they occupy. Amulets amplify Aspect effects by 50%, while 2-handed weapons amplify them by 100%. Unique items possess exclusive rolls on specific slots, incorporating specific stats and Legendary Powers. This creates a competitive environment where careful consideration must be given to each power choice. Moreover, fixed stats on unique items can either improve or hinder their overall effectiveness.

Different gear slots offer opportunities for increased damage, survivability, resource generation, or mobility, and the available stat options vary significantly within each category. This once again emphasizes the multitude of ways to tackle challenges, whether through Items, Aspects, the Paragon Tree, the Skill Tree, or any other system that best complements your build.

Lastly, the Paragon Tree stands out as the most intricate system. It allows you to customize your skill tree by combining 8 distinct boards to create your desired setup. Each board consists of Normal, Magic, and Rare Nodes, along with a Legendary Node and a Glyph Socket. Rare Nodes present additional effects that require specific Core Stat prerequisites to unlock. Glyph Sockets enable the insertion of Glyphs obtained and upgraded in Nightmare Dungeons. These Glyphs provide bonuses based on neighboring nodes and gain additional effects when certain requirements, based on Core Stats from surrounding Nodes, are met.
